In 2018, our client Bitvavo launched the first version of its digital assets trading platform, to bridge the gap between traditional currencies and digital assets. By offering transparent fees, a wide range of assets and an easy to use platform, Bitvavo is making the currency of the future accessible for everyone. In two years time, Bitvavo has established itself as the market leader in the Benelux and as a significant European exchange, with hundreds of thousands of users exchanging over ten billion euros worth of digital assets a month.

Due to fast growth and the ambition to expand into Europe we are looking for a Senior Legal Counsel to join the Legal team, located in Amsterdam. The Legal team is responsible for facilitating strategic growth at the heart of the business.

This is a unique possibility to play a key role in the next phase of a fast growing company, expanding into Europe, within a booming sector.

Together with the Head of Legal and supported by junior legal counsel, you will set up and strengthen the legal framework of the company, ensure that this framework is executed and improve the legal framework on a continuous basis. You will independently manage projects (such as the regulatory registration and license process throughout Europe) as well as execute projects that are decided on the level of the legal team or management team. In this party regulated and party still grey area, the legal team is a backbone of the organisation. The legal team is represented in the management team.

Activities for setting up of the legal framework includes:
• Obtaining regulatory licenses in the Netherlands and/or throughout the EEA;
• Advising on M&A, funding rounds and strategic investments;
• Contributing to a.o. GDPR and AML Compliance;
• Responding to and solving upcoming issues on a daily basis.

• Ideally you have 5-7 years of experience both in higher tier law firm and in-house (aware of both the highest standards as well as the daily reality of a scale-up);
• You can independently get projects across the finish line - while still being part of the legal team;
• You are eager to learn and to help get Bitvavo to the next level;
• Experience in financial regulation and/or crypto-specific regulations (most importantly ALMD5) is a strong plus;
• Affinity with cryptocurrency and blockchain;
• Dutch language strongly preferred.
